Car Free Mile-End is a volunteer community initiative looking to improve the quality of life in the Mile-End. Our chief purpose is to explore urban design alternatives that focus on active transportation and the pedestrian. This website is designed to promote the dialogue that will ultimately shape the project according to the needs of residents and local businesses. Our objective is to make St-Viateur a cleaner, safer street that is completely walkable and amenable to bike traffic. Our vision of the street would allow for extended terrace spaces, family-oriented activities, festivals, exhibitions and markets. Such spaces exist all around the world. With our main goal in mind, we also aim to create awareness of the broader issues that motivate us: global warming; energy dependence and resource depletion; ground level ozone, particulate matter and other hazardous pollution; as well as the physical danger posed by traffic. In short, we're looking at the unintended consequences of living with automobiles at the centre of public life. In that spirit, we hope to inspire your support for our initiative whatever your expertise or your experience. We anticipate numerous obstacles on our path to success, and are entirely willing to meet them head-on. We will need lots of help! Please feel free to share with us your opinions and other feedback as you see fit. If you are interested in contributing to this project, send us an email and we will put you to work!
